Streaming Video with OpenDrive

The holidays are almost upon us. As we are preparing to capture those memories of family, friends and good times, it is important to have a means to safely and securely preserve those memories in a way that will allow us to quickly and conveniently access them anytime we like. OpenDrive offers that option. With OpenDrive, you can record those memories, transfer them to your PC or Mac, upload them to the cloud, and then share them with friends and family in different ways.

With OpenDrive’s video streaming technology, sharing those memories becomes even more easy and convenient, while still allowing you to maintain that same level and standard of secure versatility that OpenDrive has become known for. Sharing a public link or granting access to a private folder will allow your loved ones to share in those memories by streaming videos instead of downloading, which avoids the need to fully download a video file before being able to view it. Whether they are accessing your videos on a computer or mobile device, streaming is quick and painless.

OpenDrive is designed to support a variety of video formats to better accommodate your streaming needs. The following are supported in our streaming video player:

  • MP4 (AAC/H.264)
  • FLV
  • M4V
  • MPG
  • MPEG

Whether someone is viewing your videos through public or private access, or you simply wish to enjoy them yourself, Opendrive’s file preview window allows you to instantly start steaming videos in a player that is provided as soon as you select the file. If the video is one of the supported formats, playback will begin as soon as you hit play.

There are different ways that you can share your videos through the OpenDrive cloud, depending on the level of access permissions you have granted for those files or the folders they are stored in. Those ways are:

File Link (URL): When you have your video(s) set to public or hidden access permissions, sharing the file link (URL) of the video will allow you to grant access to your video through the player in the OpenDrive website. Clicking the link will take you to a page that will automatically have a player embedded and ready to stream the video file.

Streaming Link (URL): If you wish to share your videos with public or hidden permissions in a way that does not send people to the OpenDrive site, the streaming link (hotlink) should be used. This option allows people to stream the video through a 3rd party video player that is embedded in a web browser or a 3rd party video player app such as Windows Media Player, VLC, Winamp, etc. This is ideal for videos that are encoded in a format other than those supported by the OpenDrive video player. If the appropriate codecs are installed on the computer that is accessing the streaming link, no matter the file format, the streaming link will accommodate that video file type.

HTML Embed: OpenDrive also supplies code to allow you to embed your public or hidden video file into a website, forum, blog, social media site or other medium. If the page supports HTML code, simply embedding the code into a post or page entry will display the OpenDrive video player on that page, which will operate the same as if it is on OpenDrive’s site.

Private Sharing: If you wish to keep your files private, people who are configured as users on your account can log into OpenDrive, access the videos in the folder you have set to share with them, and view them through HTML, streaming or download links. The user must be logged into their OpenDrive account to do this, however. Embedding and link sharing will be prohibited for private files.

Your memories are precious and deserve to not only be easily sharable, but secure and safely protected as well. With OpenDrive, you can rest assured that those needs will be met and much more.
